Clay, Smoke, and Fire

Experience the exciting and spontaneous method of smoke firing. Using small slab and pinch pots, explore dry burnishing and the use of terra sigilatta in preparation for the fire. Learn to “paint” with smoke and fire, using various resist techniques such as wax, slip, aluminum foil, and masking tape. In addition, we will build and fire a traditional sawdust kiln. Optional: bring three to six small pieces, preferably burnished or with terra sigillata, bisque-fired to cone 012-08 (earthenware) or cone 08-06 (stoneware). Please note: Bisque ware will be available for those who are beginners or are unable to bring bisque ware.
